Speak for Yourself
Speak for Yourself (2005) is Imogen Heap’s second solo studio album. This is her most notable album, and rightly so. Speak for Yourself is everything the album name suggests: Imogen Heap was putting everything she learned about producing, song writing and music into this album. Heap produced, wrote, sang and made the art for the album herself. The final outcome was as Heap described, “more Madonna than Guns N’ Roses, more Donnie Darko than Dirty Dancing…left of center, electronically sprinkled magic dust over orchestral strings, harps and things, with great lyrics.”
Most of her increase fan-base was due to The O.C., a U.S. TV drama, which featured “Goodnight and Go,” “Hide and Seek,” and “Speeding Cars.” Heap also wrote “Just For Now” for The O.C. as a Christmas and Hanukkah song; it was originally titled, “Chrismukkah,” but was deemed “too dark” for the show. Her album success can be traced to the exposure of her music through this show.
Despite the exposure, Speak for Yourself can hold its own ground. “Hide and Seek,” is a song that used a harmonizer along with her voice to create a different capella sound. Later, Heap would make an acoustic version, titled “Hide and Seek 2” for charity. Recently, Jason Derulo sampled “Hide and Seek” for his song “Whatcha Say.”
Speak for Yourself proves that when an artist sings from the soul and writes lyrics from the heart, they can surely be heard.
